A trip to a country the world rarely speaks positively about, understandably, given Taliban rule. I’m not here to deny reality; the situation is deeply concerning. But visiting Afghanistan teaches you to separate people from their leaders.

Beyond its stunning landscapes, what stayed with us were the conversations. Every evening, we spoke for hours and experienced the country through its incredibly hospitable people.

I don’t expect everyone to understand why I went. But I know our visit didn’t harm, as long as we don’t glorify leadership or ignore the truth. People are not their leaders. Both truths can exist at once.
