VOODOO FESTIVAL IN TOGO AND BENIN

We travelled to Togo and Benin in January mainly to experience the Voodoo Festival and to see how it is lived in different ways. We witnessed the large public celebrations, but also smaller ceremonies and very intimate rituals in local villages. The two countries are closely connected and feel similar in many ways, yet they differ in atmosphere, pace, and daily life. People were open, friendly, and often surprised to see visitors, as tourism is still limited in many areas. We felt safe throughout the journey and saw a lot of potential for responsible tourism. Moving from south to north, the environment changed clearly, from humid coastal regions to dry and arid landscapes, shaping both the places and the experiences along the way.
